Lorna Brown - Painter, Author, Skateboarder, World Traveler

Lorna Brown did it all the way your suppose to. She went to university, she got trained at her craft of Scientific and Natural History Illustration painting. Lorna got jobs, clients and an agent, but she never found professional happiness. As a teenage skateboarder, she had always felt free skating and left design to focus on the competitive sport of, you’ll never guess, Roller Derby. After nearly a decade of competition she felt a calling that took her to the Middle East, Palestine, where she taught young girls and women how to skateboard. Amongst the destruction of Palestine she found beauty in the urban decay and street art of war torn world. This inspiration allowed her to not only find her way back to painting, but also around the world documenting the art of the streets through her beautifully painted urban landscapes. Living the book that she’s literally writing, right now, Lorna sat down with Mark at his home in Los Angeles, while she took a break from documenting the streets and skateparks of Southern California. This is an inspirational episode, perfect for anyone looking for a change or any young woman trying to find the self confidence to live the life that she wants, not the one she thinks she’s suppose to live.

Today's Chicken Nuggets

- Traveling to Palestine and becoming an ambassador for skating boarding and western feminism.
- Learning how to care for someone else, teaches you how to care for yourself.
- The perspective of the Middle East conflicts from someone who has lived it.
- Going to school for illustration and feeling let down by the path that lies before you.
- Feeling emotionally lost in the client driven design industry.
- How loose is too loose, how tight is too tight, finding your rhythm as a illustrative painter.
- A healthy personal conflict when depicting other creatives in your own work.
- Street art versus murals versus graffiti versus tagging… The reason why each exist.

In The Circle of Trust

- Being attracted by the why of art? Instead of the final results of art.
- Finding your quest in life, getting lost and ending up exactly where you’re meant to be.
- Living your book and chasing your dream.
- Struggling to relate to the life that your “suppose” to be living.
- Evaluating the life that you really want to be living.
- Living in the present.
- How do you break free?
- Facing your fears and learning to go straight toward them.
- Allowing yourself to change, giving yourself permission to be free.
- Being prepared to give up what you have, being ready to succeed.
- Skateboarding as a life long inspiration.
- Roller Derby-ing away from your problems.
- Finding a way to put all of your passions into you love for work.

Frank Kozik in 1981  single-handedly reinvented the lost art of the concert poster. In 1993 he started his own record label, Man’s Ruin Records, during this time he designed and released over 200 singles and full-length albums. In 2001, Kozik closed Man’s Ruin to devote himself full time to fine art, design and the newly emerging art toy movement. In 2014 he took over Kidrobot as the head creative director. Hear a one on one interview with an innovator of both the arts and business, that will not allow himself to be called an innovator.

In a continuation of yesterday’s show opening Mark Brickey digs deeper into a time when the record industry was smaller, and the major record labels had more control in being kingmakers. Mark showcases how the Frank Kozik business model allowed him and so many others to grab a small piece of the music industry as it was shattering. An excellent illustration of how Net Neutrality allows small business to flourish and how the creative community must not let the current political vote push us back into times like when the Big 4 ran music and culture. Listen to tomorrow's show opening for the conclusion of this three-part series on creative control versus corporate control of media.

KANO comes by the Adventures In Design studio to give us all an update since his first appearance back in July 2016 on episode 426. Massive murals, new character designs, a new daytime gig at Cartoon Network and creating the branding for DCON 2017 (find him at booth 618) has had KANO hitting the streets and working hard, but not so hard that he doesn't get time for what matters the most, his family.

- The importance of checking in with the family and making sure your work doesn't take you too far away from what matters the most.
- KANO knows the perfect balancing act of repurposing pop-culture and intellectual properties because after all, his day job is working with many of these characters.
- "Everyone gets the art they deserve." How coworker Bill Dunn is a creative Yoda Jedi Master and how this advice might help you make peace with annoying people in your industry.
- Creating the signature look in KANO's work is more than just character design, using scanned textures, and reoccurring background themes helps pull all of his work together regardless of the time between the pieces.

Scott Ritcher is a man out of time, or shall we say from a different time; he always could see ahead of the curve and would do many things that society wouldn't discover for years to come. However, there's a pain to knowing too much and boredom that comes with accomplishment, when your real pride isn't the project in front of you but instead what's next. Scott Ritcher admittedly, even though he's smarter than most, doesn't always do the most intelligent thing, but that's because he's motivated not by monetizing his passion, he's genuinely motivated by pursuing his love whatever it may be in exactly that moment.

Scott Ritcher didn't teach me the programs, but he taught me about design and what it means to think like a designer. He didn't teach me how to manage money, but he taught me how to run a business. He didn't teach me how to be funny, but he did teach me how to laugh no matter what, and we're still laughing 27 years later. This episode had no notes, no talking points or research; it's the honest telling of friendship as two friends reconnect after over ten years of not speaking. And it's the story of getting to tell someone, thank you, for changing my life more than many others ever have. Here's to the crazy ones.

Progress isn’t linear, nor is it always measurable in traditional ways. In your health, in business, in life! Speaking specifically about our health, we can’t use weight as our only measure of success. There are many other ways to see results and to measure our progress, taking pressure off of the arbitrary metric-based goals, like the number on a scale, as our only measure for our meeting goals. In Episode 04 of Between Meals we talk all about celebrating non-scale victories and measuring progress in our health and in our life, in non-traditional ways and not letting the numbers define you!

On a perfect fall day last October, Adventures In Design hit record with an artist that celebrates the seasons, change, death, decay and life as they are one in the same and always using her work to remind us that all of these themes are not too far away from one another. Hear Mark work Tegan through her entire illustration process; if you think her work is as amazing as we do, this is a conversation not to miss.

Adventures In Design celebrated the 700th episode with one of our own, illustrator and storyteller James Flames joins us to share how he has found storytelling to be a reliable device to make his work stick out and keeping him having fun. Learning how James has illustrated his life's stories will hopefully teach us all how to tell our own better.

Today hear Mark Brickey, and Mitch Putnam not only look back on the evolution of AID but how these two designers have made their work known around the world and become two of the most respected names in illustration, movie posters and printmaking.

At the start of 2016, Tom Whalen joined us and recapped his career achievements of 2015 from creating posters for Guardians of The Galaxy, Pac-Man and Sponge Bob to doing his first ever full title cover for Marvel Comics. Surprisingly 2015 was Tom’s first year of full-time freelance, and we hear all about the migration away from the man’s paycheck.

From April 2016 Jason Munn has built a quiet style of observation and substitution in the spaces between the louder moments of our lives. The simplicity in his work speaks volumes about the confidence the ideas behind his design and the subtlety in the communication of it. Join AID as we sit down with Jason to hear about his career and his rise in the world of rock posters.

January 2014 Jay Shaw stopped by and talked about his graphic design-heavy poster style, he also shared info on his at the time new job at Mondo as a designer and soon to be an art director. However, the moment that four years later still goes down as one of the best stories ever told on Adventures In Design was the details on his first ever “design job.”

July 2014 Sonny Day stopped by Mark’s house in Los Angeles while working his way from Australia to Austin, Texas for his upcoming solo art show Mind Intern. Sonny shares how the loss of his dad opened him up emotionally to feelings that he decided not to ignore but pour into his artwork.

World's Greatest Poster Artists Volume 1
Episode 1 Kevin Tong & Matt Taylor
